IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Elim Garak
Character journal:
tailorspy
Series name: Star Trek: Deep Space 9
Canon notes: Beginning of Season 6
Species: Cardassian
Age: although not specified in canon, judging by a Cardassian's average lifespan of about 100 years, he should be somewhere around his fifties.
Arrival Condition: He won't be coming in with any injuries or major health issues.
History: Elim Garak @ Memory Alpha
Personality: In a lot of ways, Garak is fairly unusual for a Cardassian. He's a witty conversationalist, seemingly a friendly sort, prone to smiles and playful remarks. However, the people he shares a living space with know better than to trust him. A former spy and assassin for the Obsidian Order —a brutally efficient Cardassian intelligence organization—, Garak is also extremely skilled at all manners of deceit and subterfuge. He's remarkably good at avoiding answering questions he doesn't want to answer, and he has odd ways of getting close to people and getting what he needs to from them, whether that's information or something else entirely. He lies often, even in mundane situations, often simply because he enjoys doing so, and confusing people so they can't tell, of five different stories, which is the truth— if any at all.
Overall, he's not a trustworthy person. As is the case with most Cardassians, Garak believes that the ends justify the means, and that sacrifices sometimes must be made for a greater good. Granted, the shift of what he believes to be the 'greater good' has changed a lot since his exile, but his methods have remained much the same, albeit more subtle and less brutal.
He is very aware of himself and his own abilities, as well as extremely prideful of them, and he doesn't hesitate to use them, even on those he would consider friends. He's a charming and friendly sort, extremely good with words, which can make him seem weirdly captivating to a few people. The job he has taken on as a tailor on board the space station DS9 has also gained him a lot of advantages insofar as he can keep his ears out and know everything that's happening all around him, and a lot of favor with people who have grown accustomed to looking at him and seeing him as just a friendly and fairly harmless man, when it couldn't be farther from the truth.
This isn't to say Garak is a bad guy, mind. That's really a concept that can't be applied to him. Garak is someone that stands on a gray area more often than not, a neutral ground from where he can get information and use it for his own advantage and to achieve his own goals. He is self-serving and not prone to sacrificing himself for others, although it's not unheard of either, and there are those on the station who know he can be an asset in certain situations.
With a dry sense of humor, Garak's prone to sarcasm, and in stressful situations he will often resort to that, as well as constantly criticizing whoever happens to be with him, poking them and egging them into finding a solution for whatever tight spot they're into.
Garak is incredibly resilient, and highly adaptable. Though his exile was meant as a way to shame him, among other things, his extreme pride and stubbornness has made it so that not only has he found a way to survive in a place where he's practically always surrounded by former enemies, he also has learned to strive there. He will find a way to survive no matter the situation he finds himself in, and he will do so with an unwavering smile and an unwillingness to show any weakness whatsoever.
Garak is also an extremely private person, who does not appreciate people poking into his personal matters, which is funny in a hypocritical sort of way because he certainly doesn't shy away from sticking his nose into other people's business whenever he needs to— or sometimes, even, just because he feels like it.
Abilities: Like all Cardassians, Garak went through rigorous training as a child, which enabled a variety of mental abilities, such as a photographic memory and the ability to resist various forms of telepathy, mind-reading and mind-control. He's also sturdy and fairly good in a fight, as well as skilled with a wide variety of weapons, however he won't choose to engage in violence unless he has to. Overall he has no extraordinary or supernatural abilities, and certainly nothing potentially game-breaking.
Personal Item: a PADD with a colection of Cardassian and Earth literature, music, films, etc.
